COLLECTIVE MEMORY AND WATERFRONT REDEVELOPMENT: RECREATING MEMORY THROUGH PUBLIC ART IN THE SHIPYARDS, NORTH VANCOUVER, BC

Abstract

During the past three decades, North Vancouver Shipyards as one of the most recognizable and memorable historical sites of the city of North Vancouver, has been subject to waterfront redevelopment. This critical essay looks at one of the public arts at this historical place through the lens of recreating collective memory. In practical terms, the purpose of this study is to explain how collective memories might be recreated through the use of public art in waterfront redevelopment initiatives.
